AI Animation Upscaler: Take 480p and 720p Character Clips to 1080p, 2K or 4K
Video models charge by the second and by resolution, so the thrifty way to animate a character is to draft at 480p, throw away the takes that miss, and pay for quality only on the one you keep. That last step happens here: send a 3–15 second clip, choose 1080p, 2K or 4K, and pay one flat price per clip, from 16 credits.
The work is done by the ByteDance Video Upscaler. Its published description lists animation alongside live action and game captures, and names temporal consistency, meant to cut flicker and ghosting between frames, as a design goal. Thin outlines and held drawings are still the hardest case for any upscaler, and we have not run a formal test on line-art animation, so scrub through the result before you post it.
It is made for short clips you created or hold the rights to. It is not a way to remaster TV episodes or films, and the 15-second limit rules that out anyway.
Draft low, finish high
Draft at 480p
Work out the motion in the Video Lab at 480p. On Seedance 2.5 that costs 10 credits a second, against 56 at 1080p.
Pick the keeper and trim it
Choose the take with the best motion. It must run 3 to 15 seconds and weigh 50 MB or less, as MP4, WebM or MOV. Seedance 2.5 renders up to 30 seconds, so split a longer take into parts.
Send it here and choose a size
Press Upscale Video on the finished clip, or upload it. 1080p costs 16 credits, 2K 28 and 4K 56, whatever the length. The price shows before you start, and a failed job is refunded.
Scrub before you post
Step through the result around outlines, eyes and hair, where flicker shows first. Keep the original clip and its sound in case you need to put the audio back.
One upscaler, priced per clip
ByteDance Video Upscaler
A video super-resolution model built around detail recovery, cleaning up compression damage and keeping frames consistent. You choose only the output resolution; there is no frame-rate or style setting.
1080p · 16 credits
The usual finish for a 480p or 720p draft that is headed for social feeds.
2K · 28 credits
Leaves space to crop in your editor and still looks crisp on a big screen.
4K · 56 credits
For 4K timelines and big screens. Of the Video Lab models, only Veo 3.1 renders 4K itself, in fixed 8-second clips at 200 credits.
Prices for every model are on AI Models.
When upscaling beats rendering at 1080p
The upscale price is the same for a 3-second clip and a 15-second one, so the saving grows with length. Worked out from current credit prices:
- Seedance 2.5, 5 seconds: 50 credits at 480p plus 16 to upscale makes 66, against 280 rendered at 1080p.
- Seedance 2.5, 15 seconds: 150 + 16 = 166, against 840 at 1080p.
- Kling 3.0, 5 seconds: Standard (720p) at 60 plus 16 makes 76, against 80 for Pro, which renders 1080p itself. That gap is too small to bother with; upscale Kling clips only when you need 2K or 4K.
- A native 1080p render can still hold fine detail better than an upscaled 480p one. If a shot matters, compare one of each before you settle on a routine.
Line art, flicker, frame rate and sound
- Flicker shows first on thin outlines, eye highlights and hair edges. Watch those at full screen, not in a preview thumbnail.
- Anime-style motion often holds one drawing for several frames. Check that those held frames stay still after upscaling instead of shimmering.
- Frame rate: the upscaler takes only the clip and the resolution you pick. There is no frame-rate or interpolation setting, and its documentation does not say whether the output frame rate can differ from the source, so treat this as a sharpness tool, not a way to smooth choppy motion.
- Sound: we have not confirmed that every clip keeps its audio track. Keep your original file, and if the upscaled one comes back silent, lay the original sound back under it in your editor.
What it is not for
Full episodes, films and footage you do not hold the rights to. Uploads stop at 15 seconds, and the Terms put the rights to every upload on you. For a longer animation of your own, upscale it scene by scene.

Animation Upscaler FAQ
How long can the clip be?
3 to 15 seconds and 50 MB at most, as MP4, WebM or MOV. Seedance 2.5 renders up to 30 seconds, so split a longer take into pieces no longer than 15 seconds and send them one at a time.
Will it smooth out choppy motion?
Do not count on it. You choose only the resolution, there is no frame-rate or interpolation setting, and the upscaler is built to sharpen frames, not to fix motion. If a take is choppy, make a new one in the Video Lab.
Is it cheaper than rendering at 1080p?
Usually, on Seedance 2.5: a 5-second clip costs 66 credits drafted at 480p and upscaled, against 280 rendered at 1080p. On Kling 3.0 the gap is only 4 credits, so render Pro instead.
Is the audio kept?
We have not confirmed it for every clip, so keep the original file. If the upscaled clip comes back without sound, put the original audio back under it in your editor and check that it lines up.
What do the free credits cover here?
During the beta a new account starts with 50 free credits, enough for 3 upscales to 1080p at 16 credits each. More credits come with the plans on Pricing once payments open.
Can I use the upscaled clip commercially?
Under the Terms what you generate is yours within the model licences. The rights to the clip you upload are yours to check.
What happens to my uploads?
Two parties handle them: SpicyHub AI and the outside company hosting the model. Uploads are kept in your account’s storage for reuse and may help improve the service. Deleting your account erases them, and support will remove individual files on request. More in the Privacy Policy.
